Responses of Mitochondrial Oxidation Activity to Temperature and Chloropropham in Potato Tubers

Hemphill, D D
Abstract
This experiment was presented with an aim to determine responses of mitochondrial oxidation activity to temperature and chloropropham during early stages of dormant potato tubers. There were temperature-responding changes in mitochondrial oxidation activity. There were, in general, relatively rapid changes (increases or decreases) within about ten days after temperature changes, thereafter fairly constant levels. It is suggested that the rapid changes may be a transient response for adaptation to temperature change, and the constant levels may be the basic ones at geven temperatures to be maintained for basic metabolism during dormancy of the potato tubers. There were slightly lower activity at 2¡4¡É than at 20¡23¡É. It is thought that this slight difference would be due to different sensitivity of the mitochondrial systems to the temperature. After transferred from 2¡4¡É to 20¡23¡É, the tubers again exhibited similar patterns in the mitochondrial respiratory activity in response to temperature change. No effect of chloropropham on the mitochondrial succinate oxidation activity was found throughout this experiment.
